N130 - I’m totally unbiased. it just is.
N210, because available V8. Duh.
N60, because detachable hardtop and those clean lines.
Tie between N180 and N280; N180 maintains some nice lines from N130, has uprated 5VZ engine; N280 only available with 1GR V6, but has TRD Pro package for maximum compensation (it looks nice though).

Honestly I couldn’t make a determination of ranking here. I’ll give my experienced opinion since I’ve driven all but gen 5.
Gen 1: great as a weekend car/project. Pretty miserable as anything else. There are no cup holders for god’s sake.
Gen 2: fine as a daily, until the rear window stops working, and it will stop working. Guzzles gas and is slow, but otherwise decent.
Gen 3: a marked improvement over gen 2 in the power department, but not light years ahead of it. Rear hatch instead of tailgate makes for more practicality AND the window still rolls down.
Gen 4: My brother has the V6 “working man’s” model. Adequate power for moderate to not good fuel consumption. A really comfortable ride though. Dad has the V8, which has tons of power and full time 4wd.
Gen 5: again, haven’t driven one, but the one person I know who had loved it more than their ‘16 Tacoma which was in for repairs.
If I had to buy one today for DD it would either be a 3rd gen as a budget choice or a 5th gen for a “I want a newish reliable SUV that has 4WD but I don’t care about fuel economy.”

Yeah the 3VZE is garbage. It motivates it about but isn’t terribly reliable, not at all powerful or fuel efficient and does not make a nice noise.

I saw a first gen 4Runner the other day that was lifted, and painted more than one shade of olive drab, and it had a tan rag top. It was hot.

As a DD I’d definitely have the 4th gen, although I’m partial to the tailgate style of the 2nd gen. As I said, completely unbiased.

Yeah it is immaculate too. Guy was an automotive engineer for Saturn, Mitsubishi, Toyota, and Ford I think and has 3(!!!) S10s with 350 swaps, a 911, 300zx, 2 FIATs, an Audi, and a Gx too haha. Quite the interesting man.

Dang dude. IMO the first gen GX470s are some of the best looking modern Lexuses.

That’s freakin’ beautiful. I dig it.

All it takes is a rear air bag delete, a lift, some good tires, and asome chunks of metal.

The TRD Pro 4 Runner will depreciate so slowly.

Almost as slow as an N130 moves down the road

I had a 2nd gen and wish I still had it, but the one I’ve always wanted is a 1st gen so I can pop the roof off and go to the beach.
